How to Remove a Watermark from a PDF

  1. Upload the PDF that carries the watermark (PDF files only — convert Word, images or other formats to PDF first)
  2. We scan the file and recommend Auto detect (for stamps added by software) or AI mode (for watermarks flattened into scanned pages)
  3. Optionally type the watermark text, pick a colour to remove, or — in AI mode — draw a box around the watermark
  4. Click Remove watermark, check the before/after preview, and download your cleaned PDF

Why use PDFBEAR for Remove Watermark?

Surgical, not destructive

Auto detect deletes only the watermark object — annotations, layers and repeated stamp blocks — so your text stays selectable and images keep their full quality.

Two engines, every watermark type

Software-added stamps are removed structurally; scanned and flattened watermarks are cleaned pixel-by-pixel in AI mode. If nothing removable is found, the tool says so honestly instead of returning your file unchanged.

Private and secure

Files transfer over HTTPS, are processed automatically and are deleted from our servers after processing. Nobody looks at your documents.

Remove watermarks from PDF files online. Auto detect deletes the watermark object itself - text stamps, image stamps, watermark layers and annotations - leaving the rest of the document untouched, while AI mode — a PDF Pro feature — cleans watermarks that were flattened into scanned pages. PDF documents only. Free downloads keep the small PDFBEAR badge; PDF Pro downloads are fully clean.

This tool works with PDF files only

The Remove Watermark tool processes PDF documents exclusively - it does not accept Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, PNG or any other file type. If your watermarked file is in another format, convert it to PDF first and then remove the watermark here:

Once the watermark is gone you can keep working with the clean file as a PDF, or send it back to an editable format with PDF to Word.

Where watermarks actually live inside a PDF

Most watermarks are added by software - a DRAFT stamp from Word, a trial-version banner from a PDF printer, a stamp applied by an online tool - and those exist inside the file as separate objects: a watermark annotation, an optional-content layer, or a block of semi-transparent rotated text repeated on every page. Because they are objects, they can be found and deleted cleanly. That is what Auto detect does: it removes the watermark object and nothing else, so your text stays selectable, images keep their quality and the file remains a normal PDF.

The second kind is a watermark that has been flattened into the page image itself - typical for scanned documents and image-only exports. There is no object to delete because the watermark is part of the picture. AI mode (a PDF Pro feature) handles this case: it renders each page, isolates the faint repeating stamp pattern and paints it out, then rebuilds the PDF from the cleaned pages.

Auto detect vs AI mode

Auto detect (free) AI mode (PDF Pro)
Best for Stamps added by software (Word, trial tools, online watermarkers) Watermarks baked into scans and flattened pages
What it changes Deletes only the watermark objects Rebuilds each page as a cleaned image
Text stays selectable Yes - the text layer is untouched No - the output is image-based
Page limit None beyond the normal 2,000-page cap Up to 120 pages per file
Availability Free for everyone PDF Pro subscribers

Start with Auto detect. If it reports that no removable watermark was found, the watermark is almost certainly flattened - switch to AI mode (available on PDF Pro). For text watermarks, typing the exact watermark text in the options lets Auto detect target that stamp directly, which also works on single-page files where the usual repeated-on-every-page signal is unavailable. After AI mode, run the result through OCR PDF to restore a searchable text layer.

Remove watermarks added by specific tools

Most watermarks come from a handful of programs, and Auto detect handles them the same way — by deleting the object they add:

  • DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL or COPY stamps from Word, Google Docs or Acrobat — text watermarks removed cleanly, with the document text left intact.
  • Trial and free-version banners from iLovePDF, Smallpdf, Sejda, Soda PDF, Foxit, Wondershare PDFelement, PDF Candy and similar tools — added as stamps, promo annotations or "created with" link bands, all of which Auto detect recognises.
  • A specific colour — turn on "Remove a specific colour" and pick the watermark's colour to strip a coloured stamp or repeated shape while leaving the rest of the page alone.

If a stamp is text, typing it exactly in the watermark-text box targets it directly. If the watermark is baked into a scan, AI mode cleans the pixels — and you can draw a box around it so only that area is touched.

The PDFBEAR badge and PDF Pro

Free and anonymous downloads from PDFBEAR tools carry a small "PDFBEAR.COM - Free Ver." badge, and this tool follows the same rule: it removes third-party watermarks but keeps our badge in place on free output. PDF Pro removes every watermark - including the PDFBEAR badge - so Pro downloads are completely clean, with no marks of any kind.

Only remove watermarks you have the right to remove

Watermarks often exist to assert ownership. Use this tool on documents you own or have permission to edit: your own drafts, files stamped by trial software you used, documents your organization produced, or copies where the rights holder has cleared the change. Removing a watermark from copyrighted material you do not have rights to - stock photos, purchased documents, other people's work - may violate copyright law. That responsibility sits with you as the uploader.

After the watermark is gone

A few tools pair naturally with this one. Add Watermark stamps your own brand or status text onto the cleaned file. Redact PDF is the right tool when the goal is removing confidential content rather than a decorative stamp - redaction deletes the underlying text, which a watermark remover deliberately never touches. Compress PDF shrinks the result for email, and Protect PDF locks the final version with a password.

Common Remove Watermark problems and how to fix them

Auto detect finished but the watermark is still visible

Why it happens: The watermark is flattened into the page image (typical for scans and image-only exports), so there is no object for Auto detect to delete — or it is an unusual stamp the detector did not recognize.

Fix: Type the watermark's exact text in the options and run Auto detect again, or upgrade to PDF Pro and switch to AI mode, which cleans the page pixels themselves.

AI mode left faint traces of the watermark across text lines

Why it happens: Where the stamp crosses printed text, AI mode deliberately leaves those pixels alone rather than risk damaging the words underneath.

Fix: This is a safety trade-off. Traces in whitespace are removed; a light residue can remain where the watermark overlapped dense text. Auto detect avoids this entirely when the watermark exists as an object.

My output is no longer selectable text after AI mode

Why it happens: AI mode rebuilds every page as a cleaned image, so the PDF becomes image-based by design.

Fix: Run the cleaned file through OCR PDF to restore a searchable, selectable text layer.

The PDFBEAR badge is still on my download

Why it happens: Free and anonymous downloads keep the small PDFBEAR badge — the remover strips third-party watermarks but leaves our badge in place on the free tier.

Fix: Upgrade to PDF Pro to download fully clean files with no badge and no watermarks of any kind.

Remove Watermark vs manually covering the watermark in a PDF editor

The common workaround is opening the PDF in an editor and drawing white boxes over the watermark on every page. Here is how that compares to removing it properly.

DimensionRemove Watermark (PDFBEAR)manually covering the watermark in a PDF editor
What happens to the watermarkThe watermark object is deleted from the file (or inpainted out of scanned pages in AI mode)It is only hidden — the stamp remains in the file underneath the boxes and can reappear or be extracted
Effort per documentOne upload; every page is handled automaticallyA box drawn by hand on each page, easy to misalign
Content underneath the markPreserved — text and graphics under the watermark stay visible and selectableCovered along with the watermark, hiding any content the box overlaps
File integrityAuto mode leaves the rest of the PDF byte-for-byte untouchedDozens of added annotation objects, larger file, cluttered structure

Who uses Remove Watermark?

Marketing manager
Clears the agency's DRAFT stamp from an approved campaign one-pager so the final PDF can go to print without re-requesting the source file.
Small-business owner
Removes a trial-software watermark from invoices exported during an evaluation period, after buying the license, so old paperwork looks as clean as new output.
Office administrator
Uses AI mode to clean a 'COPY' stamp off scanned records before rebuilding a searchable archive, then runs OCR PDF to restore the text layer.

Remove Watermark — Frequently Asked Questions

No — it removes watermarks from PDF files only. Convert your file to PDF first with Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, PPT to PDF, JPG to PDF or PNG to PDF, remove the watermark here, then convert back with PDF to Word if you need an editable copy.

Because the watermark is not a separate object in the file — it has been flattened into the page image, which is normal for scans. Switch to AI mode — a PDF Pro feature — which cleans the pixels themselves. For text watermarks, also try typing the exact watermark text so Auto detect can target it directly.

Yes. In Auto detect, switch on "Remove a specific colour" and choose the watermark's colour to strip a coloured stamp or shape while leaving everything else in place. In AI mode you can draw a box around the watermark so only that area is cleaned and the rest of the page is untouched.

Yes — after processing, the result page shows a before/after preview of page one so you can confirm the watermark is gone before you download the file.

Auto detect does not touch quality at all: it deletes the watermark object and leaves every other byte of content alone, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution. AI mode rebuilds pages as images, so the output is no longer selectable text — run it through OCR PDF afterwards if you need the text layer back.

No — AI mode is a PDF Pro feature, because every page is re-rendered and cleaned individually. Auto detect is free for everyone and handles the most common case: watermarks added by software, which exist as removable objects inside the PDF. Upgrade to PDF Pro to unlock AI mode for scanned and flattened watermarks.

On free and anonymous accounts, no — the small PDFBEAR badge stays on the output while third-party watermarks are removed. PDF Pro removes every watermark, ours included, so Pro downloads are completely clean.
