PDF pages and Markdown documents store different kinds of structure
A PDF records where text is painted on a page. Markdown records a logical sequence of headings, paragraphs, quotations and lists. That difference matters: a line that looks like a heading in a PDF may only be larger text, and a table may be dozens of independently positioned fragments. PDFBEAR uses font size, weight and familiar list markers as conservative clues instead of pretending the PDF contains semantics it never stored.
Choose PDF to Text when plain extraction is enough. Choose PDF to Markdown when section hierarchy and list structure will make the result more useful in documentation, a notes system or version control.
Check whether the PDF contains extractable text first
Try selecting one sentence in the original. If the entire page highlights as one image, run OCR PDF before converting. OCR creates a searchable text layer, but recognition errors can still affect names, figures and punctuation. Password restrictions can also prevent extraction even when words appear selectable; use a permitted, unlocked copy.
Multi-column pages deserve special attention. A visually correct report can store text in an order that jumps between columns. Compare the Markdown against the PDF at every column change, sidebar and caption rather than reviewing only the first page.
Review headings, lists, tables and page boundaries
Open the downloaded .md file in a text editor. Confirm that #, ## and deeper headings form a sensible outline, list items have not been merged into paragraphs, and page-boundary comments occur in the expected sequence. Complex tables are deliberately left as readable text rather than fabricated Markdown tables whose cells might be wrong.
Images are not embedded in the output. Keep the source PDF when diagrams, signatures or photographs carry meaning, and add image references manually if the Markdown will become standalone documentation.
Use the Markdown without losing source evidence
For an AI knowledge base, retain the PDF filename and page comments so an answer can be checked against the original. For a documentation repository, review the diff before committing it and correct only genuine structure. If your aim is to ask questions rather than edit the extracted text, Chat with PDF keeps answers grounded in the uploaded document; Summarize PDF is better for a concise first-pass brief.
Before publishing or importing the Markdown, verify every consequential name, date and number against the PDF. Conversion makes the content reusable;it does not make the source more authoritative.
