See which text, tables, images and slide elements survive PDF conversion to ODT, ODS or ODP, and which parts need rebuilding.
- PDF preserves appearance, not the original editing model: A PDF describes a finished page: visible glyphs, coordinates, images, lines and other drawing instructions.
- ODT can preserve words while changing page flow: Digital PDF text usually becomes editable characters in ODT.
- ODS can rebuild cells but not invisible workbook logic: A visible table can become rows, columns and cell values in ODS.
Use these checks before completing What Survives When PDF Becomes OpenDocument?.
PDF preserves appearance, not the original editing model
A PDF describes a finished page: visible glyphs, coordinates, images, lines and other drawing instructions. It may no longer contain the paragraph styles, spreadsheet formulas or presentation timeline that created that appearance.
OpenDocument conversion therefore reconstructs a new editing model from the visible evidence. The format overview in ODT, ODS and ODP explained helps select the model first; this guide focuses on what you should inspect after conversion.
ODT can preserve words while changing page flow
Digital PDF text usually becomes editable characters in ODT. Paragraphs, headings, basic lists, images and simple tables can often be carried into Writer, but line breaks and page breaks may move because a word processor recalculates them from fonts, margins and styles.
Use PDF to ODT when textual editing matters more than exact coordinates. Compare columns, footnotes, floating images and font substitutions with the source. If the destination team works in Microsoft Office, PDF to Word applies the same document intent with DOCX output.
ODS can rebuild cells but not invisible workbook logic
A visible table can become rows, columns and cell values in ODS. Printed totals, dates and labels are available for extraction, while formulas, validation rules, named ranges, macros and hidden sheets cannot be recovered from a PDF that never stored them.
Use PDF to ODS for tables and verify column boundaries, merged headers, decimal separators, negative values and identifiers with leading zeros. Recreate formulas only after the extracted values have been checked.
ODP can preserve page material but not presentation behavior
PDF page order, dimensions, text and visible graphics can provide the basis for ODP slides. Some elements may remain image-led to preserve appearance, while simpler text and images can be reconstructed into separate objects.
Use PDF to ODP for an Impress starting point. Original transitions, animations, notes and master layouts are absent from the PDF and must be added again. Review aspect ratio, text wrapping and image crops before presenting.
Scans add a recognition step before structure can be rebuilt
A scanned page supplies pixels instead of characters. OCR PDF can add searchable text while preserving the scan, and document conversion can use recognition to rebuild editable words. Recognition still cannot infer information that is not visibly present on the page.
Judge success by the destination task. A Writer document needs correct reading order and paragraph flow; a Calc sheet needs correct cell boundaries and values; an Impress deck needs usable page order and visual composition. There is no single fidelity score that answers all three.
Keep a source-and-working-copy workflow
Do not overwrite the original PDF. Keep it as the visual reference, save the OpenDocument result as the editable working copy and export a new PDF only after corrections are complete. This creates a clear chain between source, revision and final delivery.
For sensitive or consequential documents, have a second person compare names, figures and page sequence. Conversion saves reconstruction time, but review is what turns a useful draft into a dependable working document.

Review an OpenDocument conversion
- Keep the source PDF open beside the converted document.
- Check text flow, values or slide order according to the selected output.
- Correct recognition errors and rebuild features the PDF did not contain.
- Save the editable source, then export a separate final PDF if needed.

Questions about What Survives When PDF Becomes OpenDocument?
Why can the text be correct while the layout changes?
Text recognition and layout reconstruction are separate processes. A flowing document recalculates line and page breaks even when every character is correct.
Can conversion recover spreadsheet formulas?
No. A PDF normally contains only the displayed values and graphics, not the workbook formulas that produced them.
Can ODP recover PowerPoint animations from a PDF?
No. PDF stores the visible page state, so timelines, transitions and speaker notes are not available to reconstruct.
